West Nile Virus

WEST NILE VIRUS

Protect yourself and your family from a serious health threat!

West Nile Virus is carried in birds, but it is transmitted by mosquitoes. Here are ways you can help keep your family safe…
  • Repair or replace any damaged or torn window screens and door screens.
  • Eliminate any standing water from dog bowls, tires, buckets, etc… where mosquitoes can breed
  • Use mosquito repellants that contain DEET, when outdoors.
  • Keep pools and spas maintained regularly.
  • Repair any leaky exterior faucets.
  • Avoid over-watering your yards.
  • Wear long pants and long sleeved shirts when outside during the mosquitoes active times, especially at dawn and dusk.
Evidence of the virus in dead birds is often the first indication that the West Nile virus has been introduced into a new region. California's Dept. of Health has set up a toll free hotline for the public to report dead birds: 877-WNV-BIRD. (877-968-2473)
