Should I Replace or Repair my Sliding Screen Door?

Many homes have at least one sliding screen door which is commonly a 1 5/8" 'Roll Form' door, which is a standard in the industry. The major problem that afflicts these sliding doors is when they stop sliding. So the question becomes - Should I replace it or fix it?

If your screen door frame is in good shape, then you can save some money by "rebuilding" it. Replacement handles and rollers are available at most hardware stores. (Hint: look for the metal rollers rather than the plastic or nylon ones - they last longer!) After cleaning out the track, you can lubricate it with a commercial silicon spray. Normal oil will tend to "gum up" the track, and attract dirt. If the job seems more than you'd like to tackle, I will be happy to come out and fix your problem.

Live Near the Beach??

For those of you who live at, or near the beach and have salt build-up on your window screens and door screens, we suggest…
1) Spray your windows and doors with your garden hose at least once a month to help wash off the salt build-up.
2) Spray the tracks of windows and doors as well as rollers and hinges with some silicone spray, this will keep things lubricated and slow down the salt build-up.
Unfortunately, nothing is going to prevent the salt corrosion, but taking steps to slow it down will extend the life of your screens.
